The seasons championship races at AMSOIL Speedway are broken into
two separate nights this season as part of the entertainment at the Head of the
Lakes Fair. Tuesday night the championships were settled in the WISSOTA
Polydome Dirt Track Series Late Models and Modifieds. Pure Stocks were
also on the card but will not settle their championship until Friday August
26th during the second round of racing at the Fair. Tuesday’s program drew
15 Modifieds, 20 Late Models and 17 Pure Stocks.
Entering the night’s competition Travis Budisalovich from Minneapolis
held a 13 point lead over Hemantown’s Darrell Nelson. Rick Hanestad of
Boyceville, WI led first nine circuits of the 25 lap Late Model main event but
was overhauled by Jeff Massingill of Keewatin. Nelson’s race was
complicated by a shredded right rear tire. He had his work cut out for him as
he restarted at the rear of the pack. Budisalovich started back in the sixth row
and charged up to finish third. Nelson’s tenth place run was not good enough
to catch Budisalovich who became 2016 Late Model Track Champion
widening his lead to 20 points.
On the WISSOTA Modified side, Darrell Nelson could not be caught in
his quest for the AMSOIL Speedway track championship. He collected his
third WISSOTA championship for 2016 as he had also is the Late Model and
Modified champ at the Proctor Speedway.
Nelson’s closest rival Neil Balduc of Bessemer, MI did his best to gain
points leading the 20 lap feature leading 13 laps before out of town visitor
Mike Anderson of Colfax, WI made the pass and went on to take his first
ever win at AMSOIL Speedway.
Dustin Follett from Cloquet, MN won his sixth main event of the 2016
season but Justin Weinberger still has the point lead which will be settled
Friday night. Jason Havel of Rice Lake, WI who’s Grandfather is in the
Speedway Hall of Fame, led for several laps before giving way to former
track champ Mike Blevins of Hibbing. Blevins and Follett dueled for the last
six laps before Follett assumed command and went on for the win.
