MYERS WINS KICKOFF OF FAST LANE MOTORSPORT SUPER STOCK CHALLENGE
By Jerry O’Brien
6-19-15 Superior, WI
Friday night was the kickoff of the Fast Lane Motorsports Super Stock
Challenge at AMSOIL Speedway. The three race series moved to the ABC
Raceway in Ashland and finished on Sunday at Proctor Speedway.
Friday night was also the debut of the long awaited new lighting, the first step
in a sorely needed two part upgrade to the system that has been in place for around
35 years. The new $100,000 system is slated to be completed in 2016.
A nice field of 97 cars braved the cloudy and cool evening including a strong
field of 29 Super Stocks for the challenge kickoff.
After qualifying heats were complete, the first of five features rolled onto the
track with 19 Midwest Modifieds taking the green flag for 15 laps. Jake Gondik
put his pole position to good use as he got a nice jump on David Simpson to lead
the first lap. Dan Kingsley, Mack Estey and Cody Carlson followed. Gondik
widened his lead to eight car lengths until the caution flag flew when Carey
LePage and Tyler Luger tangled in turn four. Gondik led the pack off at the restart
over Simpson, Kingsley, Carlson and Luger as Skeeter Estey lurked in sixth and
15th starting Nick Daronco arrived in seventh. Gondik raced away form the field
as Carlson jumped into second with nine laps remaining. Estey charged into third
ahead of Simpson and Kingsley. The second caution period came with seven to go
with Gondik still on top. The restart saw Estey sail around Carlson and Gondik to
take the lead. Also on the move was Tyler Kintner as he got past Carlson to
second. Skeeter Estey recorded his second feature win of the season at the
speedway with Kintner, Carlson, Kingsley and Deven VanHouse in the top five.
With the Super Stock special, the order of the features was changed with the
Super Stocks running their 25 lap main event just before the Pure Stock feature
putting the Modifieds as the next division to race. Jody Bellefeuille found himsself
on the outside of the front row and took full advantage with afast start as he raced
out to a stout lead over Nikki Wrazidlo, Al Uotinen, Johnny Broking and Darrell
Nelson. No one had anything for Bellefeuille as his lead widened to nearly the
length of the back straight. Broking and Uotinen battled for second and Wrazidlo
hung tough in fourth while Matt Leer moved into fifth. The first caution flag flew
when Leer tried to put an inside move on Broking in turn one, lost traction and
spun earning him a trip to the back. As quickly as the green flag flew, the caution
flag followed as Destin Lorimor lost the handle in the first turn. The restart came
with 11 laps remaining followed by yet another caution period when three cars
tangled in turn two. The restart did not go well as Bob Broking tried an inside
move in the first turn, hit the marker tires and spun. The restart saw the field reach
the half way point with Bellefeuille still in control over Johnny Broking as Darrell
Nelson overtook Uotinen for third. Kelly Estey, Deven VanHouse and Leer battled
for fifth. Nelson finally got by Johnny Broking and set out after Bellefeuille who
he was able to catch but unable to pass. Bellefeuille led the entire distance for his
first win of the season. Johnny Broking got back around Nelson for second,
Uotinen finished fourth and VanHouse recorded the top five finish.
Seventeen of the 18 Late Models started the feature with only Cory Jorgenson
who had hit the wall just before the third turn in his heat was unable to make the
call. Zach Wohlers grabbed the lead at the green followed by Kyle Peterlin, Tim
McMann and Pat Doar. A lot of shuffling at the head of the field saw Wohlers get
away to a strong lead as Doar and Peterlin made their way to second and third. The
first caution flag flew when Dave Esse spun and slid up turn four. At the green
Wohlers fought off Doar but it was Darrell Nelson who was charging forward and
shot past Doar and Peterlin while McMann as fifth. Wohlers enjoyed his lead but
Nelson closed up and the pair tried to lap two cars who were fighting over a
position. As they tried to find a way through, Nelson apparently slid up the track
and nicked Wohlers spinning him out. Nelson was charged with the incident and
chose to withdraw. The restart came with eight laps remaining and it was Peterlin
who had the run on Wohlers, took over the lead off turn four and raced away to a
big lead and the first win for him in a while. Wohlers, Doar, Jeff Massingill and
Steve Laursen in the front five.
Finally, it was time for the Fast Lane Motorsports Super Stock Challenge 25 lap
main event. The start sort of set the tone for the rest of the race as Scott Lawrence
and Willie Johnsen clashed on the front stretch. Johnsen ended up in a crunch
toward the first turn with Brian Carl, Shane Kisling and Shawn McFadden while
Lawrence spun all the way into the first turn. Carl and McFadden were eliminated
while Lawrence and Johnsen were able to continue though Johnsen’s car was
pretty battered. Since no laps were complete, the field was lined up in a complete
restart with Lawrence and Johnsen in their respective positions. The green flag
was intensive racing for the lead between Johnsen and Lawrence who were joined
by Curt Myers. The three battled closely until Myers won out just as Mark Smith
spun in the middle of the back stretch. Myers maintained the lead after the caution
period with Lawrence second. Nick Oreskovich squeezed ahead of Johnsen and
Kevin Burdick who had started 14th, moved into the top five. Myers had kicked in
the cruise control as lawrence tried to run him down. Johnsen and Burdick went
wheel to wheel for forth and Andy Davey was sixth. At the half way point Myers
enjoyed a huge lead while Lawrence, Johnsen, Burdick and Oreskovich ran in the
top five. Myers’ lead evaporated when the caution flag flew for the spin of Jim
Campbell landing him at the bottom of turn four. Myers was fast on the restart and
Johnsen moved up to go side by side with Lawrence for second. Johnsen got the
position and Burdick tried to get past Lawrence but Davey joined the group
forcing Burdick to slide back and lose ground. Myers was the easy winner to take
the early lead in the three race series. Johnsen, Lawrence and Oreskovich were the
top five.
The 12 lap Pure Stock feature finished off the night of racing as Ryan Savoy of
Superior held off defending track champion Lucas Carlson for the win. Ryan
Madsen, Jon Hammitt and Chad Carlson were top five finishers.
