Some familiar names wound up in victory circle Friday at AMSOIL Speedway
as mother nature at least provided clear sunny skies with no hint of the fog that
plagued the track the previous Friday.
The nice weather brought out the largest crowd of the young season for Meet
the Drivers night as well as a season high 96 cars in the four WISSOTA divisions
and the Pure Stocks. It is worth noting that the division with the biggest turnout
was the Late Models with 23 cars in competition.
After qualifying heats concluded, the first feature was a 15 lap affair for the 20
car Midwest Modified field. Mack Estey was the only member of the family not to
have won a feature this season and he was out to remedy the situation starting
from the outside pole Estey easily took the lead from Don Craig while last week’s
winner Dan Kingsley was in the hunt looking for two straight wins. Skeeter Estey
ran fourth and Tyler Kintner was fifth in the early going. Mack Estey moved out to
a ten car length lead which disappeared when the #99b of Brody Strachen rolled to
a halt on the front stretch. The restart saw Estey maintain the point as the scramble
behind him saw Deven VanHouse take second and Shane Sabraski appear in the
top five. Sabraski was on a mission and took third from Craig and moved up to
battle with VanHouse side by side for several laps but VanHouse was able hold
him off. Estey proved to be too strong for the field and went on to win his first
main event of the season. VanHouse won the battle for second leaving Sabraski
third ahead of Kintner and Skeeter Estey.
The 20 lap Super Stock feature got off to a thrilling start as Dave Flynn, Nick
Oreskovich, Kevin Burdick, Scott Lawrence and Andy Davey ran in a bunch in the
early going. But two laps in Mark Smith spun in turn two bringing out the first
caution flag. The restart saw Flynn get the jump on Oreskovich and Burdick who
battled for second. Burdick won the battle and chased after Flynn as Davey got by
Oreskovich and Lawrence took fifth. Tristan LaBarge joined the battle as, up front
, Davey was reeling in Burdick and Lawrence was also catching up as Shane
Sabraski joined the hunt. At the mid point Flynn was still in command but Burdick
was under fire from Davey. Also in the mix were LaBarge, Sabraski, Lawrence
and Shane Kisling. The second caution flag flew with nine laps remaining as Jim
Campbell and Pat Heikkinen tangled in turn three. The restart saw Flynn keep the
lead but Burdick and Davey were right on his tail. Davey got around Burdick and
set out after Flynn, caught him and completed the pass. They traded the lead until
Davey was able to forge ahead and took over the point. A tangle in turn two
involving Shane Kisling, Brad Kissling and Oreskovich brought out the tird
caution flag with three laps remaining. Dave got away from the pack and went on
to take his fourth win of the season all at different tracks. Flynn, LaBarge,
Sabraski and Burdick finished in the top five. There were only two leaders, flynn
from lap one to 15 and Davey led 16 to 20.
Kelly Estey the defending track champion started the 20 lap Modified A main
from the pole and led all the way for his first win of the 2015 season at the
speedway. The first lap saw a caution flag as Ken Hron spun in turn three and at
the same time Jeff Davis and bobby Houston tangled in turn one. The restart came
with the full distance remaining and Estey again accelerated into the lead followed
by Kevin Eder and Deven VanHouse. Rick Rivord maintained fourth with a
challenge from Shane Sabraski up to fourth. The red flag flew with eight laps in as
Nikki Wrazidlo and Cody Wolkowski touched going into turn one. Wolkowski
moved up the track int Jeff Tardy who then hit the first turn wall and rolled over.
He was uninjured but out of the race. On the restart Eder made a challenge on
Estey for the lead but was unable to make the pass. Darrell Nelson made his
presence felt as he moved from his fourth row starting spot to nab second and set
out after Estey. Behind them the battle wa for third as Sabraski battled with Eder
for third along with VanHouse, Jody Bellefeuille and a charging Al Uotinen. By
the midpoint Nelson had caught up to Estey and it became a classic battle between
two of the best veterans. Nelson could close to estey’s bumper on the back stretch,
but Estey was able to accelerate away on the front stretch. The second caution flag
flew when VanHouse was attempting to lap Davis and they clashed sending
vanHouse around in into contact with the wall. Both were able to continue and
VanHouse resumed his spot. The restart saw another spin by Hron in turn one, his
second. With three laps to go the green flag flew and Estey got a great start as
Nelson was holding off Sabraski for second. Uotinen also got a great restart and
raced past Eder and Bellefeuille to finish fourth.
Then it was time for the 23 car late Model field to rumble onto the track led by
veteran Harry Hanson. This 25 lap event would also boil down to a pair of
veterans going for the win and one of them would be Darrell Nelson. Nelson
started in the exact same fourth row outside position as he had just minutes before
in the Modified feature. Hanson jumped out to the lead while Tim McMann
battled with Cory Jorgenson for second. Nelson and Travis Budiaslovich were
charging into the top five as Hanson was way out in front and beginning to lap
cars. Just as Nelson made the pass for third the caution flag flew when Josh
Johnson spun in turn two. With the pack closed up to his bumper Hanson managed
to stay ahead as all 23 cars were still in the running. McMann forged into second
as Nelson battled with Jorgenson and Aaron Lillo arrived in fifth. Nelson made his
move with seven laps to go and closed up on Hanson and got alongside him in the
third turn and completed the pass off turn four with three remaining. It was
Nelson’s second late Model feature in a row at the speedway.
It was a dozen laps for the Pure Stocks and Craig Horak remembered the way
around AMSOIL Speedway as he drove the 3D station wagon he used to own to a
resounding victory in the Feature. It was a difficult event for the feature runners as
a caution flag followed by a red flag slowed the action. Some aggressive driving
by some drivers resulted in disqualification and Shania Rapp’s rollover in the third
turn. Chad carlson, Ryan Madsen, Alex Smith and Jon Hammitt finished in the top
five with only ten cars running at the end.
