PLENTY OF ACTION AS HOT WEATHER WASHES OVER GLS FRIDAY

Superior, WI.
As hot air washed over the Gondik Law Speedway Friday night July 12th, there
was plenty of action to go around as a total of 84 cars endured the 88 degree
weather to put on a show for the assembled fans.
The action featured the return to victory lane of a popular WISSOTA Late
Model driver for the first time in two years. A WISSOTA Modified driver “Finally
got to complete” a feature win; a WISSOTA Super Stock driver continued a hot
streak that matched the weather and the Midwest Modified action produced sparks
and a surprise ending.
Kyle Peterlin of Hibbing Minnesota had not won a feature race in the Late
Model division since 2017 and was looking to get back on track. After dominating
the first of two division heats, Peterlin drew the pole position for the 20 lap event
and wasted little time taking a commanding lead, Peterlin extended the distance
over the pack while his opponents sorted things out. With five laps in the books, a
caution flag flew for the 7C of Robbie Cooper who spun in the fourth turn in the
midst of the battle. This caution flag enabled defending track champion Travis
Budiaslavich to take over second and commence to chase Peterlin for the next 15
laps trying several moves in order to wrest the lead away. Jeff Massigill won his
skirmish with Kevin Carlson for third while Steve Laursen kept Darrell Nelson
amongst others busy. Budiaslovich tried a number of times to take the lead from
Peterlin who fought him off every time. The race stayed clean and Peterlin was
able to pull away in the waning laps for his first win since 2017. Massingill,
Nelson and Carlson rounded out the top five.
Pat Cook of Washburn, WI grabbed the point at the green flag in the 20 lap
Modified feature from the pole and raced away from the pack. Todd Gehl, Danny
Vang, Cody Wolkowski , Darrell Nelson and Kelly Estey gave chase. It soon came
down to a two car race as Vang was soon isolated by Nelson. The only caution
flag of the event came when Carey LePage got turned in turns one and two. After
the restart Vang led Nelson on a chase that lasted until he made a banzai move on
the leader in the third turn and attempted a slide job which worked letting Nelson
into his first lead. Vang was having none of that and came right back to get by
Nelson and back in the lead as he crossed the line for his first win in a big Mod at
the Speedway. Cook, Kelly Estey and Wolkowski finished in the top five.
Michael Blevins started the 20 lap Midwest Modified main event from the pole
and quickly took the lead searching for his first ever Midwest Modified win. The
caution flag flew when four cars spun and piled up in turn four. On the restart
Colin Chaschuk pounced on Blevins and took the lead, but the caution came right
back out when Wayne Jacques spun the #31 in turn three. Another restart saw
Blevins grab onto the lead and continue on at the head of the field. It took little
time for Brandon Copp who was also looking for his first feature win at he
speedway to find his way to Blevins. Meanwhile, Brandon Jensen who had started
deep in the pack, was flying toward the front in an effort to catch the leaders
before he ran out of laps. Blevins was able to stay in front of Copp and even open
up some distance as he flung the number 10 toward his first ever win. However,
Jensen’s mad dash would prove be to be Blevins’ undoing. The third caution flag
of the event flew on the final circuit when Jensen spun in turn two all by himself
giving Copp the chance to close to the number 10’s rear bumper. It would be a
green/white /checkered finish and it was just enough time for Copp to sneak past
Blevins for the win. It was just enough for room for Copp to bring fourteen year
old Jack Rivord along with him bumping Blevins back to third.
Kevin Burdick continued his hot streak with a win in the Super Stock feature.
Burdick started eighth and wasted little time coming to the front taking the win,
his third at the speedway and 18th over all this season. DJ Keeler, Keith Kern, Jim
Campbell and Doug Koski finished in the top five.
All that was left was the Pure Stocks and the Hornets. In the Pure Stocks
Dylan Shelton didn’t feel as though anything would stand in his sway as he took
the lead in the Pure Stock feature. A quick caution flag changed things as Jared
Akervik moved to Shelton’s bumper, racing hard until he was able to get past for
the win.
In the Hornet feature there was a wild scramble at the front of the pack with six
cars in a pack going for the lead. Things quieted down as Tyler Kachinske pushed
his #26 into the lead and drove away to the win over AJ House, Tyler Schramm,
Hunter McDougall and Dayna Marken.
