SHAW, GLENZ CAPTURE TWIN PORTS TWIN 25’S FEATURES
By Jerry O’Brien
7-26-19 Superior, WI
Don Shaw, Ham Lake, MN and Jesse Glenz, Altoona, WI each won a 25 lap
Late Model Feature during the “Twin Ports twin 25’s” Late Model special at the
Gondik Law Speedway Friday night. This event was started at the Proctor
Speedway in Proctor, MN and was subsequently move to the then AMSOIL
Speedway in Superior around 2012.
The event features twin 25 lap features for WISSOTA Late Models. In the past
few years the first of the two features has become part of the WISSOTA Late
Model Challenge Series which is now sponsored by Wollak Construction
Company. For this event all of the drivers in the top 15 of the series points were in
competition in the total 36 Late Models on hand.
The format is a bit different in that the winner of the first feature must redraw a
number from one to 16 to determine the inversion of the field. Also, the driver
with the best average finish between the two segments wins an extra $500. Should
a competitor win both of events the bonus doubles to $1000. Entering Friday’s
event no driver has been able to win that $1000 bonus.
Racing for the WISSOTA Late Models began with four qualifying heat races.
Jake Redetzke, Travis Budiaslovich, A. J. Diemel and James Giossi won those.
The heats filled out the first nine rows with 18 cars, the rest of the 25 car field
would come from two B Features advancing three drivers from each for 24 cars
plus a provisional starter starting 25th.
Jake Redetzke and James Giossi led the 25 car pack to the green flag and
Giossi used the high side to blast to the lead followed by Redetzke, Don Shaw,
Pat Doar, Darrell Nelson and Diemel. Giossi hung onto the lead over Redetzke and
the front four stayed the same, but Diemel moved to fifth ahead of Nelson who
was holding pff Kyle Peterlin. Giossi raced away to a long lead and the top few
then began to get away form each other and hit traffic. With seven laps complete
Giossi’s lead disappeared when Rick Hanestad spun in turn four right in front of
the leader who had no choice but to T-Bone Hanestad. Hanestad retired from the
event and Giossi dodged a bullet as the damage to his car from the collision was
minimal and he was able to continue in the lead as the green flag reappeared.
Giossi was able to maintain the point over Redetzke and Shaw. As the laps wore
on, Redetzke began to slip back as other drivers began to overtake him. Doar and
Peterlin were the first to advance followed by Nelson. At the mid point Giossi had
a comfortable lead though he was dealing with heavy traffic. Giossi appeared to
have everything covered, but Shaw began to close in as the checkered flag was in
sight. With a couple of laps remaining, Chad Mahder’s car rolled to a halt on the
back stretch bringing out the final caution flag. The restart did not go well for
Giossi as he was overwhelmed as Shaw, Doar and Peterlin sailed past leaving
Giossi in fourth holding off Nelson. For Shaw it was the first feature win of the
season at Gondik Law Speedway but his 11th on the season. Shaw redrew for the
inversion of the field for the second 25 lap event and put himself in a deep hole if
he was to have a chance at a sweep when he drew the number 12 which meant he
would start on the outside of the sixth row for the second go ‘round. It also meant
that Jesse Glenz who had finished 12th in the first feature would start the second
from the pole with former two time winner Jeff Massingill firing off from the
outside pole. Just before the green flag was to fly, Kevin Eder who was slated to
start fourth dropped to the back of the field with obvious issues necessitating a
lineup adjustment. He would subsequently run a lap and drop out.
At the green Glenz and Massingill staged a jailbreak and pulled away from the
field in the early going. Redetzke was third, Deven VanHouse fourth and Diemel
fifth. Shaw had moved to 10th in the first couple of circuits. With four laps
complete the first caution flag appeared when Diemel spun in turn four and left the
field. Glenz maintained the lead on the restart over VanHouse, Massingill, Travis
Budiaslovich, Redetzke, Pat Doar and Nelson. Caution flag number two flew
when Robbie Cooper and Steve Hucovski clashed in turn one. The restart came
afer one more lap was complete leaving 20 more. Glenz was in control on the
restarts as was VanHouse holding second. Doar, who had also started deep in the
field in 11th, was on the move and soon moved to third. The laps then flew by as
there was no sign of a caution flag. While Glenz, VanHouse, Doar and Massingill
races one another, behind them there was quite a battle going on between Peterlin,
Budiaslovich, Nelson, Redetzke, Mike Prochnow and Redetzke. At the halfway
point Glenz was completely in control having led from the outset. Three laps later
Doar worked his way past VanHouse into second. With seven laps remaining,
Glenz’s lead was comfortable while Doar and VanHouse were the top three.
Peterlin held down the fourth place spot and Nelson got a run on Massingill to
fifth. In the final laps Doar began to close on Glenz but it was too little too late as
Glenz completed a dominant run leading all 25 circuits for the $1500 win. Shaw’s
bid to be the first to win both features ran out with a sixth place finish. Doar was
the driver with the best average finish with runner up finishes in both events for
the extra $500.
Also on the card were the WISSOTA Super Stocks and the WISSOTA Hornets.
In the WISSOTA Super Stock 20 lap main event, Dave Flynn and Andy
Grymala led the 14 car field to the green. Lurking back in the third row was many
time track champion Scott Lawrence sharing the third row with current WISSOTA
Super Stock national point leader Kevin Burdick. Flynn led early on, but a caution
flag two laps in realigned the pack. Flynn was the leader at the restart but Burdicck
was looming over his shoulder. Six laps in Burdick took over the lead and soon
made it a big one over Flynn. Grymala, Lawrence and Jim Campbell were the top
five. With six laps remaining the caution flag again flew when Rick Klick spun in
turn three. On the restart Burdick stayed on top but there was some shuffling of the
deck behind him. Flynn managed to hold onto second at the checkered flag while
Campbell got by Lawrence to third while Grymala rounded out the top five. It was
Burdick’s fourth feature win at Gondik Law Speedway and 23rd over all thus far in
the ‘19 season.
The Hornet feature started 17 cars but the results were the same as many other
nights as Jake Smith recorded another sweep as he heads for the WISSOTA
National Championship vacated by sister Brittany. It was Smith’s fifth feature win
of the season at the speedway. Tate Niehaus gave chase and made it a race but
Smith was too stout. Tyler Kachinske, Carter Rieland and Tyler Schramm finished
in the top five.
The Gondik Law Speedway is off next Friday.
