Superior, WI
For the first time the Annual Rick Gondik Law Office Northern Nationals
became a four day affair rather than the traditional two days.
Added was Wednesday and Thursday programs exclusively for the WISSOTA
PolyDome Dirt Track Series Pure Stocks and Midwest Modifieds. The Midwest
Modifieds run all four days with a point champion who will earn an extra $500.
The Pure Stocks will race the first two days, take off Friday when the IRA Outlaw
Sprint Cars are in town for their annual visit, then return on Saturday. Their point
champ will earn $250.
Twenty-one Midwest Modifieds and 19 Pure Stocks came to race on a damp,
cloudy Wednesday on the first night of this experiment.
The Midwest Modifieds ran three heat races with passing points used to
determine who advanced to the main event. Two of the top three in National
WISSOTA Point standings were on hand. AMSOIL Speedway regular Skeeter
Estey who entered the event ten points up on Lorin Johnson and 13 points ahead
of Nick Koehler. Was on hand as was Koehler.
Three qualifying heat races were run and went to Koehler; Canadian veteran
racer Kevin Montieth and Dave Flynn of Superior.
Jeremy Nelson of Zimmerman, MN who has been on a tear, won the 20 lap
Midwest Modified feature over Craig Lofdahl and another Canadian track regular
David Simpson.
Ninteen WISSOTA Pure Stocks ran a pair of qualifying heats and a 15 lap main
event. Point races were also on the line as regular competitors Dustin Follett of
Cloquet, MN and Mike Blevins of Hibbing entered the night with Follett up by
four points over Blevins. The heat races went to former track champion Ryan
Savoy and Blevins. Follett would drop out in the feature with mechanical
problems and Blevins would finish third after leading for several laps. The popular
feature winner was rookie Dylan Shelton from Wrenshall, MN. A very emotional
young man took home his first ever main event checkered flag.
